There have been many rumours in the past week regarding the size of the next iPhone 5’s screen with larger screened devices on the market like the HTC ONE X the screen on the Apple iPhone is looking kind of small in comparison. As usual Apple rumours can be taken with a pinch of salt but this one does seem to be popping up an awful lot from a lot of different sources.
Various Apple rumour blogs across the internet have all pointed out that these rumours are well and good however it would cause Apple a considerable headache to do this, this is due to the fact that the device is not has a whole app eco system based around the current display and the 3:2 screen ratio. Changing this as they have done for the iPad which has the bigger screen would not only cause issues for Apple but also the thousands and thousands of develops in the iOS community.
One way which The Verge suggested that Apple could do to achieve the larger 4 inch screen would be to simply make the screen taller till the new aspect ratio of the screen made it 4 inch across. This would probably be what Apple would do as it would mean that they didn’t have to alter the size of the handset too much.
The comment on the matter by John Gruber was quite telling as he usually has his far share of insider information and he commented on it saying that
“Methinks ‘Colin’ wasn’t merely guessing or idly speculating.”
It adds more credit to this rumour when earlier in the week that the production managers from the factories in China have said 4 inch screens are coming. It is quite interesting to see the mock ups from the verge of what the screen would look like as you can see it pretty much looks the same because it has the same aspect ratio:
